Macro Photography-Tulip

A delicate tulip looks entirely different when viewed up close through a macro lens.

Artist Info:

My interest in photography began when I bought a Brownie box camera at the age of 12. I later graduated to a Fujica 35 mm camera with wide angle and telephoto lenses. I learned how to develop and print my own black and white photos and often used colour transparencies.

Although I was happy with some of the results, I mainly used photos as source material for my paintings and prints. Somewhere along the line I bought a Rolleiflex and a Polaroid to experiment with. I also had a Canon 35mm film camera but a couple of years ago I decided it was time to go digital so I bought a Canon DSLR EOS 1000D and started to look at photos as an end in themselves. Just recently I have added a Canon 60mm Macro lens to the 18-55mm and 75-300mm lenses I already had.

A whole new world has opened up and the most seemingly mundane subject matter has become stunningly beautiful. A microcosm has become a universe.

Winning entry

A good short story compels the reader to participate through its economy and intense focus. Much is left out of a good short story and the reader can enter through those spaces. We are drawn on by a tension in the text – what's going to happen? – and we care about what happens to the characters. Finally, what we have read represents something much greater than the plot of the story. One small incident can throw a whole life into light.

Rescue - Winner

A writer is an observer, a watcher, a listener. A writer pays attention. And some of the best stories are also about exactly that: a character who is paying attention. The close watching, the interpretation, the wondering about what it all means. In this story, 'Rescue' the narrator observes the interaction between two young men and a woman as they make their uncomfortable pilgrimage to the beach, a foreign environment for them. When the young woman gets into difficulty and the narrator rescues her, the tone of the story shifts from condescension to pity and hope. A piece of close observation and strong imagery that ends with a surprisingly gentle touch.

ACMI The biz about The Biz

ACMI The biz about The Biz

Thursday 22 November - Wednesday 28 November 2012  The biz about The Biz Everything you wanted to know but were too afraid to ask

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. Get a haircut, ya mug

There's not much that Happy Feet and Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World really have in common. One film is an infectious animated musical about a ball of fluff who can't sing but can tap like Fred Astaire (if Fred Astaire had a short body and no legs), while the other is an epic period drama starring Rusty Crowe as a dude with bad hair who can't dance but can play the violin (oh, and captain a big ship). What the two films do share, however, are scripts co-written by John Collee.  Originally coming from a background in medicine (!), Collee has not only worked with directors like George Miller and Peter Weir but has also written the screenplay for Jon Amiel's Creation and the upcoming film adaptation of the BBC miniseries Walking with Dinosaurs. If you've ever wanted to ask someone about the ins and outs of writing and selling a film script, John's your man. Which is why we're excited he's coming to ACMI as part of the Australian Film Television and Radio School's (AFTRS) Industry Insider Series.  Once a month you can spend a day with people who know all about the business of show business. This weekend, Wendy Gray, AFTRS Head of Television, will make you think inside the box in an Introduction to Television. John Collee joins us in December in a Writing for Hollywood seminar. In January, Martin Brown, producer of Moulin Rouge!, will answer all your questions about producing film projects, while February will see Philippa Campey (producer of Bastardy) talk you through the process of documentary making. This is your chance to get inside knowledge on the industry; think of it as the Cool School.  The AFTRS Industry Insider Series <http://send01.oiems.com/link.php?M=19002920&N=1697&L=3598&F=H>  commences Saturday 24 November with subsequent sessions running on select dates once a month.
