ACMI The biz about The Biz
Thursday 22 November - Wednesday 28 November 2012 The biz about The Biz Everything you wanted to know but were too afraid to ask
Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. Get a haircut, ya mug
There's not much that Happy Feet and Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World really have in common. One film is an infectious animated musical about a ball of fluff who can't sing but can tap like Fred Astaire (if Fred Astaire had a short body and no legs), while the other is an epic period drama starring Rusty Crowe as a dude with bad hair who can't dance but can play the violin (oh, and captain a big ship). What the two films do share, however, are scripts co-written by John Collee. Originally coming from a background in medicine (!), Collee has not only worked with directors like George Miller and Peter Weir but has also written the screenplay for Jon Amiel's Creation and the upcoming film adaptation of the BBC miniseries Walking with Dinosaurs. If you've ever wanted to ask someone about the ins and outs of writing and selling a film script, John's your man. Which is why we're excited he's coming to ACMI as part of the Australian Film Television and Radio School's (AFTRS) Industry Insider Series. Once a month you can spend a day with people who know all about the business of show business. This weekend, Wendy Gray, AFTRS Head of Television, will make you think inside the box in an Introduction to Television. John Collee joins us in December in a Writing for Hollywood seminar. In January, Martin Brown, producer of Moulin Rouge!, will answer all your questions about producing film projects, while February will see Philippa Campey (producer of Bastardy) talk you through the process of documentary making. This is your chance to get inside knowledge on the industry; think of it as the Cool School. The AFTRS Industry Insider Series <
